Well it's that time of year and I've been busy making new Christmas cards and writing a lot of cards for friends and family. I'm pleased with the most recent designs I've been making, over the weekend as I feel they're simple and elegant at the same time, though a little fiddly when doing the sentiment. I have some of these left if anyone would like them, and can make more on request.

I have been busy over the summer and autumn working on these table tops for a gentleman. Since finishing these first two (Tottenham Hotspur and Club Del Tappo) I have been working on another two for him. I'm really enjoying working on these larger projects.
Whilst working on these I've also had other engravings commissions to do; including a glass (with a card) for one of the priests at our Church who was ordained between the Lockdowns, other glasses, tankards, a crystal skull, sweet jars and even a light fitting! It's been a busy few months. I've had this design growing in my mind for a while now and have taken the opportunity of lockdown to get it engraved for my mum's birthday. A coral reef wrapping round a plant vase/bowl with a lion fish and a spiral shellfish. Am now looking at what other projects I can work on and hopefully finish, in between home schooling the children and trying to keep the house tidy.
I have realised I've not posted for a while as I have had a very busy 2016. I have had a lot interesting and varied commissions, engraving glasses, bowls, a clock, and worked on a project I will be able to say more about in June/July this year. One of my favorite commissions last year was for St Mary's Church in Beaconsfield. They asked me to engrave a picture of the church onto a fruit bowl, using a sketch done by one of their parishioners. I was really pleased with how this worked out and am now considering what I can do an engraving of my own Church, St Martin's in Ruislip, on. I have been working on a few projects over the past few months, along with various commissions. Most recently was a tankard for our neighbour's 40th birthday, he's into Marvel comics so Spiderman seemed appropriate as a subject matter: Last year I worked on a vase with a morning glory vine trailing down two sides and butterflies hovering round it and on the reverse two sides. I also did a vase for my parent's ruby wedding anniversary - a bouquet of calla lilies and iris on one side with an inscription on the reverse. I had some lovely commissions to do as well, including one for the joint forces, for my children to give their teachers at the end of the year and for the Watford Joggers group. I am now working on, am near completion, a vase with a chameleon and a few other pieces and hope to have one or two of them in the Guild of Glass Engravers 2015 Exhibition.
I finally gave my Godmother and her husband their Ruby wedding anniversary gift (only a little late). Jill Moger, my Godmother, is a fantastic sculptor (her website is www.jillmogersculptures.co.uk) and one of my favourite of her pieces is a large iguana with 2 fire lizards on a rock. I had managed to get some photos of this piece and used them to do a design which I engraved onto a large vase for them last year. I am currently working on an angel on a vase with outstretched wings and am hoping to have this finished in the near future. To take a break from the angel I had the idea of a hummingbird with a flower on a paperweight and have engraved this over the last two days. I really enjoyed doing this and am thinking of working with this subject more once I've completed the angel. Our new hamster, Fluffy, has definitely developed a love for his wheel over the past few days. He starts running at about 10pm and just keeps running for hours. It wouldn't be so bad, but the wheel has a really loud squeak which has become a consistent noise in our house every evening, you can hear it no matter where you are. At last I don't need to count sheep when I can't sleep, I just listen to the noise!
We would try to do something about it but after putting WD40 on the wheel of the last hamster the noise went and the hamster stopped using the wheel, I think she liked the squeak. I think it's something we are going to have to just get used to as he does look so cute when in his wheel. I haven't left any updates recently but just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Easter.
Other than a little flurry of snow it's been a nice day. We all went to church this morning and my children were very well behaved in the front pew (not sure if there's something wrong with them). They are now riding a bike and trike round my parents garden, after we all had a lovely lunch. I have had a few interesting commissions in the last couple of months. The best one was for Maureen Coumbe and her husband Tony who received MBEs on Friday 16th November for their services to children and families. I was asked to engrave two champagne glasses for them by one of the families who adopted the children they fostered.
Congratulations to you both, I think what you do is great. |
